Midcontinent Independent System Operator, Inc. (MISO) is requiring us to resume temporary load reduction for the portion of the MidSouth EC distribution system they serve. We will comply with the controlled outages until they inform us to stop.
What we are experiencing is an emergency procedure put into place by MISO to protect the power grid. Electric distribution utilities, like MidSouth, are required by MISO to conduct load-shedding procedures to prevent a catastrophic event to our entire power system across the grid that spans from Texas to Canada.
These rotating outages are staged at intervals of approximately 30 minutes at this time. We do not determine when the controlled outage requirements will conclude. We will continue to conduct the controlled outages until MISO notifies us to cease. We systematically go circuit by circuit across the entire system. Once we have gone through a complete cycle of our system, the controlled outage process will start over at the first circuits that were curtailed.
The purpose of having a controlled outage for 30 minutes is to prevent a catastrophic event in which the MISO grid could require hours, or possibly days, to come back to operational status.
